Michiel van den Brekel specialises in several different research areas in the field of head and neck oncology. In addition to research in the field of head and neck imaging, molecular biology and prognostic factors, his interests also extends to the rehabilitation of patients with cancers of the head and neck. Patients with a tumour in the upper aerodigestive tracts often have severe voice, speech and swallowing deficits, due in part to the treatment modality. The treatment and prevention of these functional limitations and greater attention to quality of life and patient counselling are relatively new areas of interest in head and neck oncology. Van den Brekel has set himself the task of gaining a better understanding of how to predict morbidity, how to make better choices between treatment options and how to optimise patient revalidation.

Van den Brekel has been working as a head and neck surgeon at the department of head and neck oncology and surgery of the Netherlands Cancer Institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital since 2000. He has been head of this department since 2009. He is also on the staff of the otorhinolaryngology department at the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA). Previously he worked as a university lecturer at the otorhinolaryngology department of the VU Medical Center and was a Dutch Cancer Society fellow at the University of Toronto in Canada. Van den Brekel has authored more than 140 publications in international journals and chapters in textbooks, and has organised numerous international symposia on the subject of head and neck oncology. He is a member of the editorial board of various scientific journals and societies and has delivered more than 250 lectures in both the Netherlands and abroad.
